All seems to be well with Philadelphia. The Phillies are in first and playing well. Of course, if you listened to sports talk radio in that town a couple of weeks ago, you would have heard that, well, they are pretty good but have no shot at winning the World Series.
Chief proponent of this theory was Howard Eskin of WIP. Of course, he can’t find too much good as it might make his pal, Charlie Manuel, a candidate for manager of the year. I’m not picking on Howard because as with anybody on talk radio of any sort, he’s not paid to be right or wrong, he’s paid to have an opinion and enternain people.
I’m writing this to remind people of just how good the Phillies are. Granted, most of their starting pitching isn’t exciting anyone. Their bullpen, however, is great and their offense is great.
Not that I’m somehow all knowing for simply pointing out those facts. However, if you think that their started have been mediocre, as mentioned, and Rollins was out for over 20 games, it does make you feel good about their chances. 41 and 28 is not a fluke for last year’s Eastern Division champs.
